How Super Lawyers are Chosen

Thomson Reuters, a legal publisher and the company behind the website FindLaw, hosts a database of practicing lawyers. In order to help potential clients decide who to hire, the company distinguishes some of them as Super Lawyers, or leading advocates for clients in their practice area and geographic region.

To become a Super Lawyer, an attorney must be nominated by another lawyer. If nominated, that lawyer must then go through a vetting process by Thomson Reuters, followed by another round of peer review. Only the highest scoring lawyers come out of this process with the distinction of being a Super Lawyer.

Because it can only start with a nomination from another attorney, the fact that David S. Katz has been named a Super Lawyer five times in a row now is remarkable – in many larger law firms, attorneys nominate each other, but the Katz Law Group is a solo practice.

Only 5 Percent of Attorneys are Named Super Lawyers

According to Thomson Reuters, the selection process is so rigorous that only the top five percent of practicing attorneys are named Super Lawyers in a given year. This makes the distinction one of the most selective in the legal field, and means that being named a Super Lawyer is a significant achievement.
