Attorney David S. Katz was recently recognized as a Super Lawyer by Thomson Reuters for his work and reputation as a top business and contract litigation lawyer in central Massachusetts. The honor is reserved for attorneys with a history of professional achievement and who have the respect of their peers.
What is a Super Lawyer?
The title of Super Lawyer is an honor bestowed by the company Thomson Reuters, a giant in the legal publishing industry. To be named a Super Lawyer, an attorney has to be nominated for the honor, vetted by the committee, and highly reviewed by their peers. Only around 5 percent of attorneys are named a Super Lawyer, so the designation is a significant achievement.
Thomson Reuters takes numerous steps to prevent attorneys from manipulating the system and to ensure that the title goes to someone who deserves the recognition.
Nominations have to come from another attorney in the state – lawyers cannot nominate themselves – and attorneys are not allowed to campaign for nominations. Additionally, nominating an attorney from a different law firm carries more weight than an in-house nomination. Lawyers who were not nominated can still become Super Lawyers if the research and vetting staff are impressed with their credentials.
Vetting is done by a research department at Thomson Reuters. It looks at the following factors, which are not all weighted equally:
- Verdicts or settlements won
- Transactions
- Representative clients
- Experience
- Others honors and awards
- Special licenses or certifications
- Position or role in the law firm
- Activity in the bar association or professional community
- Pro bono work and community service
- Scholarly achievements, like publications or lectures
- Education and employment background
- Other achievements
High scoring lawyers then go through a peer review process by other attorneys in their practice area. The highest scorers from each category of law firm – solo, small, medium, and large – are then awarded the Super Lawyers distinction. The final list comprises no more than 5 percent of the lawyers in the state.
